Brokaw FFA Members Compete in District Leadership Events
Seventy-five Brokaw FFA members of Clarinda recently participated in Leadership Development Events and other activities at the Southwest District FFA Convention held at Clarinda High School on Saturday, March 2. Many of these members moved on from sub-district contests in February as a result of being in the top three in their respective contest areas. Chapter members competed in twelve different speaking events, four quiz events, two welding events, and two officer book events. The following members competed in the following events at the district level with their placings in parentheses: Aidan Johnson, Gabby Derry, Lexi Clark, Morgan Manes, Taylor Rasmussen, and alternates Jillian Dammann and Maggie Carlson in the Parliamentary Procedure Contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Callie King, Kaylee Smith, and Dalton Wright in the Chapter Program contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Taten Eighmy in the Radio Broadcasting contest (Gold, 2nd- advance to state); Stevie Wilmes, Elaina Hesse, AJ Woods, Britney Kolamneo, Owen Wright, Haidyn Garrett, Alexa Barnes, and alternate Sydney Hanson in the Conduct of Meetings contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Alayna Shepherd in the Creed Speaking contest (Silver, 3rd- advance to state); Riley Nothwehr in the Extemporaneous Speaking Event (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Bailey Nordyke in the Public Speaking contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Brodie Miller in the Ag Sales Event (Gold, 1st- advance to state); Addison Dow in the Chapter Website contest (Gold, 1st- advance to state); and Hailee Fuller, Hannah Comer, Hadley Miller, Blakely Ridnour, Bella Johnson, and Alisha Buttercase in the Experience the Action contest (Gold, 2nd- advance to state). Two middle school FFA teams competed in competition as well: Griffin Phillips, Tatum Comer, Emmett Comer, Lily Weinreich, Ellie Carter, Bella Johnston, and Kelsey Stephens in the Ag CSI contest (Silver); and Aylah Johnson, Sydney Sperry, Alyse Stroud, Makensey Henneman, Lucy Morrison, and Madi Mothershead in the Ag Impact contest (Gold, 2nd- advance to state). Members also competed in four quiz events. In the Greenhand Quiz competition, Britney Kolamneo received 5th place Gold and Owen Wright and Elaina Hesse tied for 9th place Gold. Also receiving Gold ratings were Stevie Wilmes, Alayna Shepherd, Haidyn Garrett, and Addison Lehman. Receiving Silver ratings were Hadley Miller, Noah Wellhausen, Hailee Fuller, Chance Streitenberger, Alisha Buttercase, Bella Johnson, Mallory Woods, Hannah Comer, Noah Taylor, and Olivia Moore. Receiving Bronze ratings were Katherene Fisher and Carson Sunderman. In the Chapter Quiz event, Lexi Clark received 4th place Gold. Also receiving Gold ratings were Morgan Manes, Gabby Derry, Taylor Rasmussen, Jillian Dammann, Aidan Johnson, Addison Dow, and Maggie Carlson. Receiving Silver ratings were Mataya Eighmy, Dylan Vardaman, Kylie Meier, Richlyn Muff, and Jayka Mark. Receiving a Bronze rating was Jalon Olson. In the Farm Business Management quiz event, Grant Barr received 2nd place Gold and Cael Wagoner received 9th place Silver. Receiving Silver ratings also were Cale Clark and Taten Eighmy. In the Discovery Quiz competition, Makensey Henneman received 7th place Gold, and Tatum Comer and Bella Johnston tied for 9th place Gold. Receiving Silver ratings were Kelsey Stephens, Bristal Johnson, Alyse Stroud, Colton Neihart, Maddi Mothershead, Timber Miller, Lily Weinreich, Aylah Johnson, Sydney Sperry, Jenna King, and Gregor Hughes. Receiving Bronze ratings were Iyzak Washburn, Jayde Mark, Trevor Smith, Jonathan Smith, Kennedy Hull, Kamden Williams, and Lucy Morrison. Noah Comer received a Gold rating and 1st Place in the Arc Welding competition and Cael Wagoner received Silver in the Oxy-Acetylene Welding contest.
Brodie Miller and Kaylee Smith submitted the Reporter’s Scrapbook for review at the district level. The chapter scrapbook received 1st Place and a Gold rating. The Chapter Secretary’s Book submitted by Quinn Durfey and Riley Nothwehr received a Bronze rating. Maggie Carlson and Jillian Dammann served as delegates during the business session and voted to elect the 2024-2025 Southwest District officer team. Kaylee Smith performed her duties during the general session as a member of this school year’s district officer team.
After applications and interviews in February, Kaylee Smith, Morgan Manes, and Riley Nothwehr were selected to be on the ballot for district officer positions for next school year. These FFA members gave a two-minute speech and answered questions, and the elections were held. Morgan was elected as District Treasurer and Riley was elected as District Reporter on the 2024-2025 Southwest District Officer Team.
All eleven leadership speaking contest areas that advanced above from the district level along with the Reporter’s Scrapbook will compete against members from chapters out of the other five FFA districts in the state of Iowa at the State FFA Leadership Conference held in Ames on April 15-16.
