Brokaw FFA Soils Team Repeats as Iowa State Champion
Four Brokaw FFA members of Clarinda recently competed in the Iowa FFA State Soils Evaluation Career Development Event at Iowa State University on Saturday, October 15, in Ames, Iowa. The team of Cale Clark, Dalton Wright, Quinn Durfey, and Grant Barr received a Gold rating and placed 1st out of 30 teams from across Iowa. Wright was the individual state champion, Clark was the individual reserve champion, and Barr placed 6th out of a total of 117 individuals. Because of the first place finish, the Brokaw Soils team qualified to compete in the National Land & Range Judging competition in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in May of 2023. This marks the thirteenth time in the last twenty years that a soils team from Clarinda has qualified for the national competition and the third time in the last five years that a Brokaw Soils team has won the state competition.
The Brokaw team advanced to the state competition after winning the Southwest District Soils Evaluation event on September 21. At the district competition, Clark placed 1st overall, Wright placed 2nd, Barr placed 3rd, Noah Comer placed 7th, and Durfey’s alternate score placed in the top 10 as well out of 155 individuals.
The soils event included the judging of four soil pits, plus a written test on soils in Iowa. The score card used to judge the soil pits is divided into five parts: Surface Features, Soil Features- The Profile, Land Capability Classification and Productivity Potential, Evaluation of Management Practices, and Suitability of Soils for Non-Agricultural Uses.
