Brokaw FFA Members Compete in District Leadership Events
Forty-eight Brokaw FFA members of Clarinda recently participated in Career Development Events at the Southwest District FFA Convention held at Southwest Valley High School on Saturday, March 6. Many of these members moved on from sub-district contests in February as a result of being in the top three in their respective contest areas. Chapter members competed in nine different speaking events, two quiz events, and one officer book event. The following members competed in the following events at the district level with their placings in parentheses: Adam Johnson, Allyson Johnson, Brevin Coston, Phoebe Garrett, and Luke Baker in the Parliamentary Procedure Contest (Gold, 1st- Advance to State); Kristen Smith, Lanie Garrett, and Shaya Harris in the Chapter Program of Activities contest (Gold, Alternate to State); Jason Wright in the Radio Broadcasting contest (Gold, 1st- Advance to State); Quinn Durfey, Amelia Hesse, Presley Jobe, Eli Vorhies, Dalton Wright, Aly Meier, and Brooke Meyer in the Conduct of Meetings contest (Gold, 2nd- Advance to State); Madelyn Pulliam in the Ag Sales contest (Gold, Alternate to State); Brodie Miller in the Creed Speaking contest (Gold, 3rd- Advance to State); Kari VanNostrand in the Extemporaneous Speaking Event (Gold, 2nd- Advance to State); and Jadyn Sunderman in the Job Interview contest (Gold, 2nd- Advance to State). Three middle school FFA teams competed in the Ag Impact contest as well. The team consisting of Dakota Wise, Lynnae Green, Madison McQueen, Kaylee Smith, Jerzee Knight, and Tobi Sunderman received a Gold rating; the team of Aidan Johnson, Cooper Phillips, Morgan Manes, Alexis Clark, and Taylor Rasmussen received a Silver rating; and the team of Addison Dow, Jayka Mark, Jalon Olson, and Rylee Pulliam received a Silver rating. Freshmen Greenhand members participated in the Greenhand Quiz contest with Jase Wilmes (3rd), Dalton Wright (4th), Quinn Durfey, Amelia Hesse, Brodie Miller, and Eli Vorhies receiving a Gold; Presley Jobe, Madelyn Sharr, Brooke Meyer, Aly Meier, Matthew Olson, Cale Clark, and Alex Lihs receiving a Silver; and Landry Hester, Grant Barr, Noah Comer, Cael Wagoner, and Jett Williams receiving a Bronze. Members competing in the Farm Business Management Quiz event were Jason Wright (3rd), Ethan Fast (4th), and Hailee Knight with a Gold; and Cheyenne Sunderman with a Silver.
Jadyn Sunderman and Hailee Knight submitted the Reporter’s Scrapbook for review at the district level. The chapter scrapbook received a Gold rating and 2nd Place, qualifying it for state competition. Jalyn Sharr and Carter Larson served as delegates during the business session and voted to elect the 2021-2022 Southwest District officer team.
After applications and interviews in January, Hailee Knight and Phoebe Garrett were selected to be on the ballot for district officer positions for next school year. Hailee and Phoebe gave a two-minute speech and answered questions, and the elections were held. Both Hailee and Phoebe were elected to district office, with Hailee being elected the 2021-2022 Southwest District Reporter and Phoebe being elected the 2021-2022 Southwest District Sentinel.
All six leadership speaking contest areas that advanced above from the district level will compete against members from chapters out of the other five FFA districts in the state of Iowa at the State FFA Leadership Conference held in Des Moines on April 19-20.
