Speech
I am often asked for ways in which parents can help support or improve speech and language skills at home. One of the easiest strategies to use in any setting is recasting. This strategy allows parents or any communication partner to correct or expand speech and language without obstructing the natural flow of communication. This strategy can be used with speech sound errors (e.g., Child: “I saw a tat.” Parent: “Yes, that was a CAT.”). Recasting can be applied to grammatical errors (e.g., Child: “I drinked some juice.” Parent: “Yes, you DRANK some juice.”). It is also a powerful strategy to expand language and increase vocabulary (e.g., Child: “Cow!” Parent: “I see a cow too! That is a dairy cow.”). It is not necessary for the child to repeat you. It is more important that they have a chance to listen to the adult model, process what they’ve heard, and “store it.” Any questions about speech concerns please feel free to contact the school 712-542-4510.
