Brokaw FFA members have recently competed in soils judging events at both the district level and state level. On Tuesday, September 30, six Brokaw members competed in the Southwest District Soils Judging contest held at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. The team of Baillee Warren, Cori Bebout, Logan Brooke, and Will Mellencamp placed 1st out of 19 district teams. Bebout placed 2nd overall, Warren placed 3rd, Mellencamp placed 4th, and Brooke placed 6th out of 74 total individuals. Paetyn Rock and Allison Fast also competed in the district event as alternates for the Brokaw team. The 1st place finish qualified the team to compete at the Iowa FFA Soils Judging Career Development Event at Iowa State University on Saturday, October 18. At the state contest, the Brokaw team received a Gold rating and finished 5th out of 29 teams from across Iowa. The 5th place finish qualifies the Brokaw Chapter Soils Team to compete in the National Land and Range Judging Competition held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, May 5-7. This marks the seventh time in the last twelve years that a soils team from Clarinda has advanced to the national competition.
In the state competition, Brooke placed 13th overall out of 109 total individuals. Bebout placed 24th, Warren placed 28th, and Mellencamp placed 31st for the Clarinda team.
The soils event included the judging of four soil pits, plus a written test on soils in Iowa. The score card used to judge the soil pits is divided into five parts: Surface Features, Soil Features- The Profile, Land Capability Classification and Productivity Potential, Evaluation of Management Practices, and Suitability of Soils for Non-Agricultural Uses.
