CHS Large Group Speech Students Advance To State
Clarinda High School students performed at the District Large Group IHSSA speech contest held at CHS on Saturday, January 25. Nine CHS groups performed at the contest and seven of the groups will advance to the state contest to be held at Ankeny High School on Saturday, February 8.
Those groups receiving one “I” ratings from their judge(s) include a Readers Theatre selection titled Last Letters Home. Students in Readers Theatre are Robbie Leach, Sam Rarick, Travus McGregor, Mariah Mullen, David Rahn, Dylan Warrick, Madi Cabbage, Rachel Schaner, Grace Davidson, Cassidy Marcum, Cori Owens, Hannah Sunderman, and Josey Stanton. The One Act Play is Down Came the Rain by Burgess Clark and features Nathan Jones and Levi Frazier. The technical crew for the One Act Play includes Trent Aldrich, Alex Guthrie, and Sara Williamson. Two Ensemble Acting entries from CHS are Sorry by Timothy Mason with Adam Carroll and Maddy Davidson, and “Her Heart” from Almost, Maine by John Cariani with Isaac Durfey and Holly Crawford. Two Group Improvisation teams will advance to state. They include Jacob Slough, Brandon Bommer, and Jordan Kilani. Another is Celby Holmstrom, Jade Brownfield, Ian Eaves, and Hannah McCormack. In the category of Musical Theatre, Megan Calfee and Savannah Sieburg will perform selections from the Guys and Dolls.
Two additional groups performed at the District speech contest, and received a “II” rating. In the Short Film category, Adam Carroll produced an original script, Tetrophobia. The film featured Sebastian Eighmy, Nick Clement, Rachel Schaner, Isaac Durfey, Robbie Leach, Grace Davidson, Maddy Davidson, Dillon Chambers, and Dylan Warrick. Finally, the Group Improvisation team of Annie Wallin, Chandler Strough, and Delayne Glassgow also received a “II” rating.
All of these students also worked diligently to organize and host judges and students from 30 schools in performance centers during the contest day. Everyone at CHS would also like to thank the many parents and community members who supported the arts in our schools by volunteering to work at the contest.
