Architectural Design -- We have been creating architectural drawings with a software called Revit . Revit is the primary software used by most architectural firms. The students completed an amortization schedule for a 15 year and 30 year fixed mortgage. The students have finished their basement walls ,floor plans and roofs for their house into a three-dimensional drawing. Additional drawings that will be designed in class are: basement plans, wall sections, elevation drawings, plot plans, and kitchen plans. The students will conclude their house plans by creating a three dimensional walk-through of their home. If time permits, we will create a three story business building.
Small Engines- -We have been studying the four-stroke and two-stroke cycle engines, hand tools and specialty tools, measuring parts with the dial caliper and micrometer, and the ignition system in a small engine. The students are overhauling a four-stroke cycle engine. During disassembly, the students measure each part and check the specifications to see if the part is worn or if it can be reused. Students will learn organizational skills, learn how to order parts, and learn trouble-shooting skills as they attempt to re-assemble and start their motors.
Home Improvement- - This class is designed to give students hands-on skills that they will be able to apply when they own or rent their own house or apartment. The students are paired up into groups of two and will build the corner of a 4’ X 8’ house. They are required to build the sub floor and stud walls with a rough opening for a window and a door. They will wire their houses for two outlets, a switch and a light. After completing that task, they will rewire their house with a three-way switch. They will also sheet rock and mud the taped seams and screw heads. We will apply trim around the floors. We will conclude the class by learning how to shingle a roof.
Drafting and Communication A --At the beginning of the year, the students learned to sketch and read various scales. Students are presently learning about math coordinates and how they are used to create lines and angles for 2-dimensional objects. The students created a crankcase cover gasket for the Small Engines Class. We will continue throughout the year to learn how to use the AutoCAD software to create drawings and solve math-related problems. Each student will also create a 3-dimensional model by downloading an object from the internet and plotting it with our Makerbot plotter.
Drafting and Communications B –In this second trimester class the students learn how to complete text and dimension their drawings. They also learn how to use layers and line weights to better present their drawings. During class they also create the front view, top view, and side view of an object from a given shape. Towards the end of class they complete a full working drawing that includes views, line weights, dimensions, and title box.
