Tips from the Nurse
- Dress appropriately. Please check what the temperature is going to be for the day and make sure everyone is dressed appropriately for the weather that day.
- Maintain a healthy diet and good sleep habits.
*3-6 Years Old: 10 - 12 hours per day
*7-12 Years Old: 10 - 11 hours per day
*12-18 Years Old: 8 - 9 hours per day.
- Drink plenty of water. Drinking water helps your body to stay hydrated and helps your immune system do it's best to fight off infections. Drinking water also helps alleviate headaches, body aches, and sore or scratchy throats. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle from home that they can reuse. Especially when they may not be feeling the best. Our school has a water bottle refilling station in each or our buildings that are readily available to students. Please make sure water bottles have a tight fitting lid that does not spill easily. Water bottles with water in them should not be carried or stored in backpacks or bags. Books and electronics can be ruined by a water bottle leaking or breaking. Do not share food or drinks.
- Cover your cough and sneezes. If a kleenex is not readily available remind your child to cough or sneeze into their elbow area. This helps to limit the amount of germs on hands that will be touching door nobs, desk tops, books that may be shared ect.
- Don't sniff, Blow it out. Remind your child to blow their nose as often as possible when they have nasal congestion. This will help get rid of germs inside of the nose and sinus cavity. If your child's nose is getting sore from blowing or wiping it have them use soft kleenexes. They can also bring vaseline or chap stick to be kept at school to help with the soreness.
- Keep your hands away from your face. Your hands get thousands of germs on them throughout the day. When you touch your mouth, nose or eyes those germs can enter your body and make you sick.
- Keep electronics clean. Wipe down cell phones, tablets, computers and any other electronics that are touched often with appropriate cleaner. We use our electronics many times throughout our day. They become covered in germs from our hands, other people touching them, where we set them down at, and germs in the environment from others coughing or sneezing.
- Get vaccinated against influenza. People get vaccinated to keep from getting influenza and to keep it from spreading. When very young children, elderly adults, or those that are immunocompromised get sick with influenza it can be deadly.
- Stay home and rest. If you have a fever over 100.0, have a bad cough, or feel bad enough that it could interfere with school stay home. Going out in public when you are ill spreads germs to other people and it makes your it harder for your body to fight the infection. Students must be be fever free/ vomit free without any fever reducing medication for at least 24hrs. before returning to school.
Wash your hands!!! This is the most affective way to stop the spread of germs. Wash both sides of your hands getting in between your fingers, under and around your fingernails, and your wrist area. Use plenty of soap and water. When you cannot wash your hands with soap and water use hand sanitizer and cover all areas of your hands and wrist.
