Brokaw FFA members have recently competed in soils judging events at both the district level and state level. On Tuesday, September 26, seven Brokaw members competed in the Southwest District Soils Judging contest held at the Armstrong Research Farm near Lewis. Price placed 2nd, Herzberg placed 4th, and Brown placed 6th overall out of 90 total individuals. Brokaw members Cooper Williams, Lane Mellencamp, and Ethan Jones also competed in the event as alternates. The 2nd place finish qualified the team to compete at the Iowa FFA Soils Judging Career Development Event at Iowa State University on Saturday, October 7. At the state contest, the Brokaw team received a Gold rating and finished 7th out of 30 teams from across Iowa. Herzberg placed 7th and Price placed 11th out of 114 total participants.
The soils event included the judging of four soil pits, plus a written test on soils in Iowa.
