Third Graders Observe September 11
Third graders observed September 11 by reading the book "The Boy in the Red Bandana" by Honor Fagan Crowther. The story is about her 22 year-old brother, Welles Crowther, who always carried or wore a red bandana so that he could be like his father. He was working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He did not survive the attack but his family later learned that several people were saved by a man wearing a red bandana, and they knew that Welles had shown compassion even in his final hours. The bandana became a symbol of strength, honor, and courage.
