5th Grade Field Trip

The CMS fifth graders took their annual field trip to St. Joseph, Missouri, on April 19. They toured the Remington Nature Center, the Pony Express Museum, and the Patee House Museum. The students were divided up into three groups and rotated through the museums spending approximately an hour in each museum. Several new exhibits have been added to the Pony Express Museum to make it even more enjoyable for the students and teachers. The tour guide in the museum kept students engaged by involving them in each exhibit demonstration. The Pony Express and Patee House Museums take students back in history to the beginning of the 1800’s. The museums integrate the Westward Movement across the Midwest to technological advances throughout our nation’s history. The Nature Center added natural sciences through a variety of animal species displayed throughout the museum, an interactive scavenger hunt, and a walking trail along the Missouri River. Most of the students would tell you that they wished they could spend more time in both the Pony Express and Patee House Museums. The students enjoyed their lunch in a city park across from the Pony Express museum, where an older model of one of the first steam engine trains is displayed.

*Update Contact Info*
Reminder to parents to update contact information throughout the year if anything changes, such as cell phone numbers, work numbers or emergency contact numbers so the school has the most current information in the event of a student emergency or illness. Students that bring a personal computi ng device to school (Kindle, iPad, iPod, etc.) should use it for educational purposes only.

6th Grade Field Trip
6th graders took a field trip to Des Moines on April 10th. While in Des Moines, students visited the Iowa Hall of Pride. The Iowa Hall of Pride shows the history and accomplishments of Iowa’s athletics, academics, and arts. The Iowa Hall of Pride does this through hands on activities and interactive displays. Students then visited the Iowa State Capitol and were given a tour of the building. Pictured above is Brady Williams by the Bell of the USS Iowa. The focus of the tour was the history of the building, its art and architecture. Students were able to visit both legislative galleries as well as the Iowa State Law Library.

7th Grade Field Trip

On May 15, seventh graders took a field trip to the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, Nebraska. Students participated in three activities to learn about the time period when Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic. Lindbergh didn’t have money for specialized equipment, so he had to build with what he already had. During one activity, students worked with a partner to design a periscope using only items they would find in their house. The second activity was a scavenger hunt. Students explored the hangar that housed several historical airplanes. Finally, each group had the opportunity to visit the planetarium where they watched a video about flight.

Science Board Games

7th graders have finished the chapter, “Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures” in science class. Students learned about the Periodic Table, what a compound is, and what defines a mixture. They enjoyed listening to the “Element Song. They are beginning to recognize different elements, compounds, and mixtures outside of the classroom. Groups, for a culminating chapter project, created board games. Pictured above are students enjoying playing each other's board games to help them review for the chapter test.

He will now compete in the Nationals at Atlanta, Georgia on June 1st.

Math Bee

On March 26th, five 6th grade students attended the 2013 SWI Regional Math Bee Jamboree. They are pictured above. They took tests in five individual rounds and then a team round. The categories were ratio, proportion, and percent; number sense and estimation; patterns and functions; geometry and measurement; probability and statistics. Each round was timed, and calculator use was limited. They worked very hard with Holly Crawford early mornings before the competition. It was a great experience for all involved.
