Volunteer Program
Experts say that most kids today do not feel a part of the community as a whole. If they don't feel a part of it, they don't feel any responsibility for it either. The youth volunteer program, 'YES', is trying to bridge that gap. The program is simple:
Kids fill out a registration form and indicate possible areas of interest for volunteering. We try to pair young people with RSVP volunteers as often as possible to provide an inter-generational experience, as well. When they are close to 20 hours of volunteer work, they notify me or tell Mr. Lawrence at the high school. They receive a tee-shirt with the international volunteer symbol and Youth efforts in Service on it. If they continue after that, they receive a certificate signed by Mayor Gordon Kokenge at the yearly awards assembly. This is a great reference for job applications and college applications. Graduating seniors also receive a certificate and a volunteer pin.
Kids can help individuals as well as organizations. If you know of an elderly person who needs assistance with yard work, etc., your child can assist the person and count those hours. Just be sure to have the person initial the volunteer hours sheet.
